Why Should You Choose Stainless Steel For Your Undermount Sink?

Friday, April 30th, 2010
Ron Freeman asked:

Stainless steel sinks have been accepted widely as the sink of choice for kitchen remodels.  For years the cast iron sink was the number one sink found in homes.  The weight, the cost and the inability to repair the porcelain chips in these sinks has made them less favorable.  Other products have come on the market and some are simply a better choice.

Stainless steel is probably the number one choice for sinks today.  Available in both drop in and undermount configurations, these sinks are beautiful, durable and functional. They are available in so many different shapes and sizes they can be made to fit almost any application, either indoors or out.

The cost of a good quality stainless steel kitchen sink is within the reach of most people considering a kitchen remodel or simply replacing their countertops.  The plumbing company showrooms are generally the most expensive place to buy these sinks, with the stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot coming in second.  There are good companies on line who offer first class undermount sinks at very reasonable prices.  You don’t want to compromise on quality when you are making the investment to do major work in your kitchen.  Plan ahead and look for a company with a good reputation, fast shipping and a good warranty and return policy.

Some of the things to consider when buying a stainless steel sink are gauge (thickness) of the metal and sound dampening qualities.  The gauge of stainless steel sinks generally run from 16 to 23 gauge.  The lower the number the thicker the metal will be.  Generally the 18 gauge sink is fine.  Keep in mind the thicker the metal the more expensive the sink and it will not wear any better or last longer.  You are looking for the most quality at the most reasonable price.  The sink should also have sound dampening pads on the bottom of the sink.  Don’t look for real thick pads.  They will be a 32nd to a 16th of an inch, but these are fine.  The sink should also be sprayed with an undercoating on the bottom to prevent condensation from forming on the bottom in humid climates and dripping underneath the cabinets.

The finish on the sink should be a brushed finish.  The highly polished sinks are beautiful when first installed, but do not wear well.  They show nicks and scratches the brushed finish will hide.  There is also a large selection of matching faucets and accessories for this finish as well.

Stainless steel sinks, either the standard style or the zero radius commercial style, are the most practical, affordable, easy to care for and generally accepted sink in the market today.  They also look great with the wide variety of stainless appliances available.  It is a choice you will not regret making.

Typhoon Sinks Ferry with Over 700 People Onboard!

Saturday, April 24th, 2010
aliceangel7 asked:

Over 700 people remain missing after the “Princess of the Star” ferry in which they were traveling sank during typhoon Fengshen. Rescuers are making their way through rough seas to search for missing people as the typhoon continues to rage. With winds of up to 120 miles per hour, Fengshen struck the central and northern Philippines on Saturday. A coast guard rescue ship reached the waters off Sibuyan Island, 300 kilometres south of Manila, where the MV Princess of the Stars sank after running aground. A hole in the hull was seen as the ferry lay submerged about a kilometer and a half from the shore of Sibuyan. Weather has prevented rescuers from reaching nearby islands where survivors could have drifted. A US Navy ship from Okinawa, Japan, was expected to arrive early Tuesday near Sibuyan Island south of Manila, where the ferry sank. Only 38 people had been rescued, including 28 passengers and crew members who came ashore Monday after drifting at sea since Saturday. One survivor recounted the sinking: “There were many children trapped inside the boat. I could hear them wailing before the boat sank,” said Renato Lanorias, a crew member of the 23824-ton ferry who survived by clinging to the rope of a life raft until he hit land, along with three others. Lanorias said he could not forget the hundreds of bodies floating at sea and the cries for help from the victims as the ship keeled over and went under. Princess of the Stars, owned by Sulpicio Lines, sailed from Manila at 8

How often should you clean the kitchen sink?

Friday, April 16th, 2010
Dana the Great (яє∂ нσт) asked:

I heard on the Jon Tesh radioshow that the kitchen sink is often a great cesspool for bacteria than the toilet. Totally shocked, I immediately scrubbed the sink down with water and bleach. I do this every other day.

Am I doing this right?
I always wash it out each night, but I do serious scrubbing every other night.

It’s stainless steel.
