Why Does My Kitchen Faucet Always Leak?

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010
chandu palle asked:

Drip. Drip. Drip. Nothing’s quite as annoying as the monotonous patter of a leaky faucet dipping into kitchen sinks. But why do faucets leak, and how can you prevent it from occurring? Well, if you purchased a cheap kitchen faucet made of cheap parts with cheap labor, then chances are it will start leaking shortly after installation. However, if you purchased a quality Rohl Faucet or Blanco Faucet, the chances of your faucet leaking are minimal.

The main cause of a leaky faucet is wear and tear. Cheaper kitchen faucets break down faster, it’s a fact. They are constructed with low-quality sealants and rings, which do not withstand the daily rigors that a family will put on a kitchen faucet.

Leaking near the handle: Children will lean on faucet handles, or push them up higher and higher thinking that it will allow more water to come out. Teenagers will be careless and smack the faucet handle up or down. And of course, we adults will also push the faucet to its breaking point now and again. This sort of pressure will wear down the internal O-rings of a faucet causing it to leak near the base of the handle.

Dripping from the nozzle: This is the annoying pitter patter that you hear while trying to fall asleep. The first possibility is that the faucet is just not turned off completely. The second possibility is that the internal washer is corroded, or a valve seat needs to be replaced. Put simply, the internal parts are worn down.

Again, when you purchase high-quality kitchen faucets from manufacturers like Rohl or Blanco, you needn’t worry about leaks for many years. This is because they are constructed with sturdy materials, and assembled professionally and meticulously to withstand day-to-day use.

Kitchen Remodeling: Choosing a New Kitchen Sink

Saturday, January 9th, 2010
Jorge Ribeiro asked:

Kitchens are havens for a lot people. It also reflects the personality of a lot of homeowners. It is no wonder then that most homeowners require that their kitchen be comfortable and just the way they want it to be. Unfortunately, this is not the case for a lot of people. If you enter your kitchen and you feel that you are not happy with how it looks, you might want to consider remodeling. It does not have to be a total makeover. You can opt to change only a part of your kitchen or replace certain fixtures like your cabinets and flooring. Great ideas for remodeling your kitchen are endless. Your imagination may probably the only thing that can limit what you can do. If you want, you can start your remodeling stint with your kitchen sink.

Kitchen sinks are one of the most commonly used fixture in your kitchen, thus, it is more prone to wear and tear. While it is permanent fixture in your kitchen, purchasing a new sink and having it installed can give your kitchen a whole new look.

In purchasing a new kitchen sink, you can check out your local home improvement store since they offer a wide range of kitchen sinks that you can choose from. If you live in a city or town where there are a handful of these stores, it would be wise to check out each so you can find the sink that you really like with the best possible price. If after scouting and you’re still not able to find a kitchen sink of your fancy, then it’s high time to go online and check out retail stores that offer kitchen sinks and, who knows, you might just find the kitchen sink of your dreams.

No matter where you purchase your new kitchen sink—online or “offline”—there are a couple of things to consider though in choosing you sink. First, of course, is the size. If you are simply replacing your kitchen sink (and you happen to have nonstandard-sized sink), you might find it hard to find a replacement sink. Your kitchen counter already has a pre-sized sink, so, unless you’re willing to create a bigger hold in your counter, you might need to take your kitchen remodeling project a little further. But if your kitchen remodeling stint requires new kitchen cabinets and countertops, the size of the new kitchen sink would not really matter.

Another thing to consider is the style. Traditional kitchen sinks have two basins although some only come with one. To determine which type of sink suits you, consider your needs. Not having a dishwasher at home can be a great factor. If you wash your dishes on the sink, it would be more convenient to have a sink with two basins, one for scrubbing and washing and the other for rinsing. Sinks with only one basin are a bit more contemporary and stylish.

Style and design does not end with the number of basins. Of course, color is always a factor to be considered as well. Most kitchen sinks have a stainless steel color although there are also other sink colors like white, granite, biscuit and almond. More often than not, more than the number of basins, it’s actually the color that determines whether a homeowner will buy the sink or not. It’s also worth noting that the color of your kitchen sink should compliment the other parts of your kitchen. If you’re toying with a theme on your kitchen remodeling project, make sure that the color of your sink fits right in or else, it may look out of place.
