How do I add an overflow outlet to a bathroom sink?

I recently renovated my upstairs bathroom and used a vanity top with a pre-attached undermount sink. The sink didn’t have an overflow hole, but I didn’t think that I would have a problem until my girlfriend left the water running with the drain closed!

What I want to know is if it would be practical to do something like drill a hole in the sink and somehow add an outlet that would connect to the drain. Does this even make sense, or should I try something else? Any help would be appreciated.
